Dec 13: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing | Annie Braithwaite, Utah

Today's posting comes from Annie Braithwaite. Annie married my nephew Graydon. Our family has been very impressed with this young lady. She is personable, warm and beautiful. I happen to know that she and I share a love of music. This girl is talented on both the piano and cello.

Annie says, "Each December, the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square convene to dazzle a 21,000 person audience with an festive and elaborate concert to celebrate the Christmas season. The inspiring event opens with a grand processional featuring large sets, festive décor, companies of dancers and music that makes the season come alive with the spirit and joy that Christmas brings."

She continues, "In 2012, Alfie Boe, an acclaimed tenor, joined the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for one of the most magical of these Christmas extravaganzas. In addition to a jovial medley of Home for the Holidays and a moving performance of Les Miserables’ 'Bring Him Home,' Boe performed a traditional Christmas Carol brought to life by Mack Wilberg’s impressive arrangement. 'Hark, the herald Angels Sing, glory to the new born king!' opened the familiar tune. It was then that the displays, the sets, the lighting, and the décor faded to the background. What was left was a simple but glorious carol celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ."

Annie concludes by saying "The Savior himself declared, 'I am the light and life of the world' (3 Nephi 10-11). His light and life bring meaning and a fullness of joy that cannot be obtained from any other source. His redeeming sacrifice for each of us makes it possible for us to again live with Him as our 'savior through eternity.' This Christmas season, I hope we can let the elaborate displays of Christmas fade and highlight, as Alfie Boe does in this well-known carol, the perfect and glorious message of our Redeemer's birth."

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Written by Felix Mendelssohn
Arranged by Sam Cardon

Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Lord is he
Savior through eternity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
