December 24: O Little One Sweet | The King’s Singers

Happy Christmas Eve!

I love little babies! Not sure why. Maybe it’s something that’s in my genes. I know both of my parents really loved children (I'm the youngest of 10). Children are the hope of the future. Any attention or time spent raising a child is time invested in the future. As a father myself, I always wonder if I am doing enough. Enough fathering. Showing enough concern. Teaching enough. Loving enough. Both times we have had a child, I think of my sacred responsibility to raise my children (and I am reminded quite often). Each child is sent from Heavenly Father and already has a unique character and personality. I want to help my children rise to their potential.

I imagine Mary (or even Joseph) singing this to the baby Jesus.

Here are some things I like about this song:
  • I love this song because the lyrics remind us why Christ came to earth…because the “Father” sent him to fulfill a “purpose”. He didn't just come to do miracles...he came for a specific purpose.
  • Full sound for a quartet – listen to the parts as a whole…and then listen to pick out the parts!
  • The moving 2nd tenor and bass lines are excellent!
  • I love the line that says “thou camest here from heaven’s domain, to bring men comfort in their pain.” Notice the preposition used: in their pain. God doesn’t always take away our pain, sorrow or troubles, but he does find a way to make it easier for us to bear them. For some reason, we are to learn to carry them. “And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord” (Mosiah 24:15). The Savior succors His people (Alma 7:11-12).

This Christmas Eve, think of how the Savior has brought comfort to you in your moments of pain.

O Little One Sweet

O little one sweet,
O little one mild,
Thy Father's purpose thou hast fulfilled;
Thou cam'st from heav'n to mortal ken,
Equal to be with us poor men,
O little one sweet,
O little one mild.

O little one sweet,
O little one mild,
With joy thou hast the whole world filled;
Thou camest here from heav'n's domain,
To bring men comfort in their pain,
O little one sweet,
O little one mild.
